And even got snow for her birthday!

I really wanted to have a big party, at a fun venue with dancing and lots of friends. But of course, with Covid and the restrictions, we ended up celebrating at home with just a few. Perhaps we can have a Sweet 16 1/2 in the summer! Olivia's serious side as an Irish dancer. Covid cancelled the World Championships not once but twice, as we just learned the 2021 Championships are cancelled. However, Olivia continues to train hard with the Hooley School of Irish Dance "as if" the championships were happening and we have fingers and toes crossed for Nationals in July.

Olivia definitely has her silly side!
We love this girl to the moon and back and are so proud of her caring nature, helpfulness to others, and dedication. It's been a tough year with virtual school, dance classes on Zoom, and cancellations too numerous to count, but she takes it all with a good heart and attitude. She's developed some great teaching skills this year as well.

Family ties https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2021/2/family-ties We all had a lot of family time in 2020!

I met up with the Hoffman family in Wyomissing on a beautiful (although somewhat chilly) day in early December.

Still crazy and in love with two teens in the family!

Next time we will have to include their two pups!

Contact me today to schedule a family photo session!

Girls and Horses: part 2! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2021/1/girls-and-horses-part-2

Susannah has been riding since she was eight. Owning many horses, some good, some definitely a challenge!

In 2012 in a freak accident, her horse kicked her and sent her to the Hershey Medical Center ICU for a week with a shattered liver.

Then this tough girl went on to the police academy nine months later! And by the way, this is my oldest daughter!

Susannah and Remy have been a team for two years now, riding in the adult amateur hunters at Woodberry Farm in York. They are ranked third in the zone, and won the Maryland Horse Show Association year end finals for hunters and equitation. They also qualified for the national finals.

(Remy is NOT the horse that kicked her!)

Unfortunately, as with just about everything else in 2020, Zones and the other finals were cancelled.

Hoping for great success for this team in 2021!

Girls and horses: part 1 https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2021/1/girls-and-horses Allison graduated a year early from high school! But the pandemic through off our spring senior photos plan. But in the fall we were able to shoot her "senior" photos post graduation, with her horse, Oslo.

I miss my days of "horse mom" and hanging out at the barn watching my daughter ride, so I am always up for an equestrian session.

Oslo has the perfect perky ears! Allison competes regionally in the jumpers and boards her horse at Spring Haven Stables

Flashback!!

I have to include Allison's epic "Snowtober 2011" photo! Her mom wanted family photos that fall, but wanted snow, which can be a rarity here in Lancaster County. But right before Halloween it snowed...a lot of snow...a foot of snow! The opportune moment!

October 2020!

Contact me for your Class of 2021 senior session! Pets are always welcome!

Irish Dancers in 2020 https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2021/1/goodbye-2020 One of my 2020 projects was photographing Irish dancers from my daughters' studio, Hooley Irish Dance. With the pandemic closing the studio for months and cancelling all the competitions, the kids were able to put on costumes and shoes and we had some fun sessions in various outdoor locations in the area.

These dresses are custom made for each dancer by the fabulous dress designer Craig Mason of Open Wings in England.

Craig danced in the Riverdance and is also a teacher and owner of a dance school.

Several of these girls, including my daughter Olivia (left) and Mia (right), were supposed to compete at the World Championships in April, sadly cancelled and on hold right now in 2021.

With classes on Zoom and practicing at home, the girls were all happy to get back into the studio this fall

and prepare for the 2021 season. Fingers crossed!

Alysha'a Quinceañera https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2019/1/alyshaa-quincea-era
When I was asked to photography Alysha's Quinceañera, I admitted I had never been to one before but it sounded fun! And I had a connection to Alysha, who I first met Alysha a few years ago when we hung out in Downtown Lancaster with my girls as models and I mentored her in portrait photography. Alysha does not like formal portraits and neither do I, so we had a great time on part one of the Quince photos, at Greenfield Park.

Of course, I had to include her camera (even if it is a Nikon haha!)

I loved learning about all the cultural elements--the changing of the shoes, the fifteen candles, and seeing the choreographed dance by the girls. Looking forward to capturing more Quinceañeras in the future!

Owen's newborn session! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2018/5/owens-newborn-session Meet Owen! My grandson!

Owen was born March 15, and I've gotten a bit behind in posting to this blog!

I am fortunate that my son and daughter in law live locally, so I am able to get some baby cuddles often.

First baby, and first grandchild on both sides of the family

If you remember the "Where the Wild Things Are" baby shower from a few posts back, I incorporated a few of our shower decorations here in the newborn photos.

I shoot my newborn sessions in your home, not a studio. New parents are definitely more comfortable in their own homes, so why pack up baby and go anywhere else for first photos?

Contact me today to schedule your newborn session

The gazebo provided some cover from the little bit of rain that was completely unexpected!

Enjoy these sneak peaks!

Such a lovely momma-to-be! Yes, it's a boy!

(Sad that I won't be able to meet their baby boy, as they reside on the west coast.)

Baby Shower: Where the Wild Things Are https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2018/1/baby-shower-where-the-wild-things-are My son and his wife are expecting their baby boy in March!

The grandmas, aunties and friends threw a shower for Elizabeth over the weekend on the theme of "Where the Wild Things Are."

My sister created some awesome decorations, while I covered the photography.

A friend provided these adorable favors for all the guests.

Cousins waiting for the party to start.

Wishes from Aunt Natalie, age nine.

A few portraits finished off a lovely day!

{Newborn session} Everett https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/12/-newborn-session-everett

Big brother Findlay welcomes his baby brother Everett!

This family is new to the area, and I had a wonderful time capturing their second son's newborn photos.

When I come to my client's homes, we find all sorts of fun things that make great props and photo ops--like this tent! Just one of the reasons I love coming to your home for a newborn session. Everyone is more relaxed and we can incorporate your own items to make the session personal

Everett was such a sweetie

Yes this is a real smile! He even smiled at me twice during the session!

Gianna was born right before Halloween so of course a costume was needed for her newborn session.

Who doesn't love candy corn?!

She was a little dear throughout the session with a nice mix of awake and sleeping.

Did you know I shoot my newborn sessions at your own home? New moms are much more comfortable at home than in a studio.

Allison & Oslo Equine Session https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/9/allison-oslo-equine-session I have missed horses so it was good to be back in a barn again! This session was shot at Spring Haven Show Stables

Allison's parents recently made her dreams come true with getting her this beautiful horse, Oslo. Allison and Oslo are currently competing jumpers in the local show circuit.

Oslo is a perky 15.2 hand Warmblood and he loved to have his ears up! Mom was on "ear duty" with a trusty bag of mints to crinkle but we didn't even need to use them.

Oslo usually wears a bit-less bridle in the jumper ring but put up with wearing a hunter bridle for the shoot since it was pretty :)

I love to see this bond between a girl and her horse.

My girls rode hunters for many years and there was nothing I enjoyed more than hanging out at the barn and watching them ride.

Horses=love

Ember's Cake Smash! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/9/embers-cake-smash

Ember recently turned one so it was time for a cake smash!

She was a little unsure of what to do with this big pink gooey sticky concoction.

Mom showed her the ropes and let her get a good taste.

Frosting is also fun to paint with! Mom made her the adorable cupcake skirt and the cake matched the outfit.

Cake time done--time for a quick getaway!

Charlotte: newborn session! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/9/charlotte-newborn-session

It can be stressful the first few weeks with a new baby which is why I like to shoot newborn sessions in my clients homes, and use a lifestyle approach to the session. Mom, Dad and baby are definitely more comfortable, and it even gives us a chance to include the nursery, heirloom items and even family pets.

Here's a sneak peak of Charlotte's newborn session

Mom had this great idea to include her wedding dress, and our session was on Erin and Robert's wedding anniversary!

Super cute nursery theme of woodland animals

Robert gave Erin a beautiful infinity ring at Charlotte's birth, and we added that to this capture.

Friends Session https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/6/friends-session These three friends wanted a special "friends session" so we went to the pop up wildflower field to check it out.

I have never seen so many delphiniums in one place! I have been trying to grow them for years but am lucky to get one bloom.

After the flower field, we went to a park to find shade!

Silly!

Sassy!

The river was nice and low and perfect for a little wading, which also felt great on such a hot day!

The Susquehanna Bridge was the perfect background.

We also visited several of Corey's favorite places, including the golf course where he learned to play .

And a park next to his middle school with a fantastic avenue of trees.

I love incorporating the interests and special places of my seniors in their photos.

Do you have a senior in the class of 2018? Book now to reserve your session. I am scheduling through the end of 2017.

Bat Mitzvah! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/5/bat-mitzvah I had a blast shooting this Bat Mitzvah! I admit, it was the first time covering this type of event, but I loved it! The party was at the Inn at Leola Village, a gorgeous venue! Miss N is a soccer player, so the theme was the World Cup, with soccer decorations and floral arrangements to die for. Here are some highlights of the event:

Lovely wisteria on the grounds of the Inn made for beautiful portraits.

The traditional hora dance, where the girl and her family are lifted up in chairs.

Proud Dad!

Gorgeous tables!

Class of 2017: Meet Allyson! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/5/class-of-2017-meet-allyson Allyson is a home schooled senior getting ready to graduate, who is very active in her church and has a heart for children. Last summer, she traveled to Eastern Europe to work with children on a missions trip with her church. She is also an accomplished Irish dancer! We met in the fall for her senior session at Stauffer Park.

If you actually own a tiara, of course you wear it in your session!

Irish dancers do bling in a big way! They wear big curly wigs with big sparkly tiaras and it's all a part of the sport.

Allyson not only dances with the Hooley School of Irish Dance, but she is also one of the assistant teachers. And she will be competing at the North American National Championships this July!

Here's Allyson in full Irish dance costume performing at the Hooley spring showcase.

Ireland! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/5/ireland In April we traveled to Ireland, where my twelve year old daughter competed in the World Irish Dance Championships in Dublin. It was a huge accomplishment for her to qualify! She earned the spot by placing 13th out of 110 girls at Regionals. We are super proud of her, and continually amazed that we have a child who is in the top 1% of her sport, competing at the World level!

We were able to see some of the sights of Dublin and do a bit out touring after the competition, and I was able to check the Cliffs of Moher off my bucket list. Here are some highlights of the trip:

The kids actually chose to visit the Cliffs of Moher, a.k.a the Cliffs of Insanity from their favorite movie The Princess Bride. Since we didn't have a car (even though we lived in Scotland for two years, my husband doubted his ability to remember how to drive on the left side of the road), this day trip involved a long bus tour from Dublin to the Cliffs. Fortunately it didn't rain, and everyone enjoyed the trip!

Touring around Dublin included a visit to Christchurch Cathedral (I love medieval buildings)...

and the creepy but vastly interesting Kilmainham Gaol where we learned a lot of Irish history.

Our eight year old chose to visit the Book of Kells exhibit at Trinity College because she had read about it. The exhibit included the beautiful library. I really wanted to climb this staircase!

And of course, one can't be in Ireland without...

Did you know that?

One afternoon we took the train to the fishing town of Howth. We walked around the harbor and up to a small ruined abbey.

For our last full day in Ireland we boarded another bus and this time headed to the Boyne valley, to see some of the Neolithic sites. First stop was the Hill of Tara. A little rain didn't stop the kids from jumping, nor rolling down the hills.

The sun came out and the sky was glorious when we arrived at Newgrange. This Stone Age passage tomb and temple is similar to Maes Howe in Orkney, Scotland. On the day of the winter solstice, a beam of light shines through an opening along the passage, into the tomb and illuminates the center.

Beautiful views!

Finally here's my daughter on the World Stage We aren't allowed to photograph competitions but at majors such as Worlds, there is a photographer and thankfully I could purchase some photos. Photo credit: Feis Photos. Dress by Open Wings.

Red Thread Session: Jacob https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/5/red-thread-session-jacob

Look at this cutie! Jacob is 18 months old and was adopted as a newborn. Rain was not in the forecast when we met at Lampeter Park but for their Red Thread Session, but rain fell anyway! Fortunately there is a cute little gazebo there so we parked ourselves there while the rain fell.

But Jacob is an energetic little guy and wanted to run outside anyway, so we all ended up a little wet...well Jacob ended up a lot wet! He even held my hand and asked to walk in the rain.

The sun ended up coming out and we got some time on the playground equipment which made for some cute portraits.

Jacob was such a happy little guy for the entire session. His family is very blessed to have him in their lives.

Little Gary was awake for most of his session but he finally gave in at the end.

Class of 2017: Meet Maggie! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2017/1/class-of-2017-meet-maggie Maggie is not only an accomplished actress, but she's also a singer and an Irish dancer at the Hooley School of Irish Dance and one of the sweetest and most encouraging girls I know. And can dance a mean treble reel and sing a beautiful rendition of the national anthem!

We met up at Hershey Gardens.

This shot was all Maggie! We definitely had some fun. Dance with a pig? Why yes!

Leaping over Hershey Park was my favorite shot of the day. I loved how we could incorporate her love of Irish dance and her hometown of Hershey!

Class of 2017: meet Sarah https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/10/class-of-2017 Here are some highlights from two recent sessions of senior girls from the class of 2017!

First, here's Sarah. She chose the grounds of her school for her session since it is one of her favorite places! And since she is an Irish dancer, she also brought along her dance shoes and her perpetual trophies. She earned this trophies by getting a first place at a competition; she got to keep the trophies for one year, then return them so another dancer can win them. Since she had to return the trophies soon, she definitely wanted to incorporate them into her session!

Isn't this dress gorgeous? It's Sarah's competition dress, covered in crystals for lots of sparkle on stage!

We're wishing her good luck this week as she is traveling to England to compete in the Great Britain Irish Dance Championships!

Lauren and Sujit's Wedding! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/8/lauren-and-sujits-wedding Lauren and Sujit had their beautiful wedding outdoors at the Fireside Tavern in Strasburg.

I'll admit to a few nervous moments when it looked like a major storm was going to come through, but it blew over and the sun came out during the ceremony.

Enjoy these sneak peaks!

I think this capture of Lauren and her grandmother is one my favorites from the entire day.

The couple included elements of Sujit's culture in their ceremony--the giving of garlands and the seven vows of marriage.

Stunning cake!

Beautiful first dance.

Congratulations Lauren and Sujit!

The Twins are One! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/8/the-twins-are-one I met the twins last summer when they were just a few months old….now they are 14 months. And very different personalities! Where Jacob was a little ham who never stopped smiling and knew how to pose with a hat, Genevieve was a serious little girl who wasn't too sure about the lady with the camera. Here are some scenes from our lifestyle session at their home

We had some fun too with pearls, phones, and puffs! Miss Genevieve loves to eat and I couldn't resist including this last shot:

The Three Bairs https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/8/the-three-bairs I met Collette, the oldest of the Three Bairs, when she was just a newborn. Now she is three years old and a big sister

I adore her curls!

In one of her newborn photos, she was wearing this headband…it still fits!

We were blessed with fantastic weather and this spectacular view near their home

Middle Bair Hezekiah has the coolest name of any child I have photographed! And, he is looking mighty dapper in his tuxedo

The littlest Bair is not a newborn, although he may look like one. Titus was born very premature, and at three months old he had just come home from the hospital.

(Knockout Kreations provided the adorable and appropriate bear hat for this session)

Jessie + Jon are Married! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/6/jessie-jon-are-married

Jessie and Jon had their family wedding at the historic General Warren Inne in Malvern. After all the rain we had in May--I think we had a total of 3 dry days the entire month!--we were all happy to have sunshine, although it was hotter than we expected! They chose a very intimate wedding, with a small group of family attending.

I met them before the ceremony for some photos of the bride and groom. Jessie's dress was a lovely rose-gold color, with a vintage feel to it, don't you think?

We loved the wisteria on an arbor behind the Inne. Enjoy some of these sneak peaks from their special day.

Scotland https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/5/scotland When my daughter, Olivia, began Irish dancing classes in 2013, I didn't know a thing about Irish dancing, have no Irish ancestry and no connection to Ireland whatsoever! But my husband and I had lived in St Andrews, Scotland for two years back in the 80s and did take some Scottish country dance classes (we were terrible at it). Reading up on Irish dancing I learned there was an entire competitive angle to it. So I told Olivia, in jest, at the beginning of her taking classes, "If you practice really, really hard, and get really good, the World Championships are in Scotland in 2016!" She looked at me like I was crazy. Perhaps I was at the time...

Well, she did it. She qualified for Worlds at our regionals back in November, and we traveled to Scotland in March for the championships! I thought I would share with you some of the highlights of our trip.

We spent the first few days in Glasgow, visiting the Cathedral, the Necropolis (large old cemetery on top of a hill behind the Cathedral), walking down Buchanan Street, and practicing before competition day in the Royal Concert Hall

Olivia on the World stage! Photo by Feis Photos

Photography and video is forbidden at all dance competitions, and as a photographer, this rule is particularly irksome! But fortunately at events such as Nationals and Worlds, there is an official photographer who does take action shots of the dancers.

After the competition we took the train to Edinburgh, one of my favorite places in Scotland. The Castle sits at the top end of the Royal Mile, on top of the remnants of an old volcano, with the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the bottom and the Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat behind. And we were blessed with fantastic weather. Scotland in March is usually quite dreary, but we had blue skies and temps in the 50s.
View of Arthur's Seat from the castle Ruined Holyrood Abbey, behind the Palace--lovely old stonework

Our final stop was St Andrews, where we had a wonderful visit with old friends, and more beautiful weather to explore the medieval town. St Andrews may be known to many of you as the home of golf, but it is also home to the ruin of the largest cathedral in Scotland, and  prestigious St Andrews University, where not only did Prince William and Kate attend, but more importantly, my husband (but not at the same time)! Tom and I lived in St Andrews back in 1986-88, where he attended University, and I worked for St Andrews Pottery and Bonkers gift shop, took many photographs and wrote a few travel articles.
There's also a ruined castle, which hasn't fared well over the centuries, but has a really cool tunnel under the castle as well as fantastic views of the North Sea. The bishop of the Cathedral once lived here.
Fishing villages dot the coast of Fife. Crail is one of the most picturesque, with stone cottages on narrow streets leading to the harbor.
But don't drive your car into the water!
Hope you enjoyed this little tour of Scotland!

Mother's Day! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/5/mothers-day

Once again this year, I participated in the Lancaster Newspaper Mother's Day Tribute. Although due to the weather, and my travel schedule I was only able to capture two families this year. I have photographed both families before, and it's always fun to see how the kids have grown.

Grater Park in Ephrata provided the perfect setting for Danielle and her seven children. Eight people and eight rocks!

The first time I met Erin she had one daughter; now there are two! Cold weather had us shooting in the train station, but I do love the light and the oak benches in the waiting room.

Babies! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/5/babies I can finally share with you one of my favorite photos from last year. We had to wait until the twins adoptions were finalized. Genevieve and Jacob are now almost a year old, and I hope to share first birthday photos with you soon.

Sweet Aaron was just 10 days old in the following photos.

Can you tell Dad is a baseball fan?

Aaron's parents love to travel, and have had adventures all over the world. I'm sure he will have his own passport soon!

Supporting the Mix at Arbor Place https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/2/supporting-the-mix-at-arbor-place I donated a photo session to the Mix at Arbor Place's annual fundraising banquet and met the winners of the auction in the fall for a family session.

These kids are adorable!

The Mix is doing a great work in Lancaster City, offering after school programs for at-risk youth in a faith-centered community center. And I am proud to say my son, Jeremy, is the assistant director of this organization that is making a different in the lives of city kids.

Take a look at their website to find out how you can get involved! I'll have another portrait session and package up for auction at this spring's event!

The M Family https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/2/the-murphy-family

Amy confessed to me that she hadn't had family photos taken in years. That situation had to be remedied!

Her beautiful girls are growing up!

I love the light coming through the trees. There could be some deer in the background--we had a few photo bombers!

The girls are Irish dancers with Hooley School of Irish Dance, and we celebrated their passion and accomplishments with a special session in costume.

Engaged! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2016/2/engaged I am excited to be photographing two weddings this spring/summer!

Jessie and Jon are getting married in May. We met last fall for an engagement session in the Garden of the Five Senses in Lancaster County Park. It was a bit chilly, but the fall leaves were beautiful. Yes, we even made a few leaf piles and threw them in the air.

Lauren and Suijit's wedding will be in June. I captured their engagement photos on the grounds of the Hans Herr House, Lancaster County's oldest homestead.
We loved the old buildings on the property as well as the fields, fence and fall leaves.

Senior Guys https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/11/senior-guys

Collin's senior session featured his guitar, his dog, and the cool treehouse he and his dad built years ago

This photo became very special to Collin's family, as their elderly dog Bailey passed away just a week later.

Brendan was another senior guy I photographed earlier this fall, along with his extended family. I had captured his older brother Nicholas's senior session a few years ago.

He reminds me of a young Ethan Hawke ;) what do you think??

We also grabbed some fun shots of his group of cousins

Senior Girls! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/10/senior-girls The subtitle for this post is: FaithSquared. Both these lovely ladies are named Faith, and they are both assistant teachers at

the Hooley School of Irish Dance

We went back in time for Faith #1's session…to 1830. Faith is very involved with the Girl Scouts, and spends a lot of time at the Girl Scout camp and is a guide and camp counselor at the Furnace Hills house. Girl Scouts can live as a 19th century girl through games, historic cooking methods, gardening, dress up and more. I got a tour of the property and Faith dressed in her period costume for her session. Herbs from the garden made for an impromptu bouquet.

Country girl Faith #2 donned her boots and brought her truck to Lancaster County Park.

Faith is an accomplished Irish dancer, and brought along some of her awards

We had to finish off the session with a few Irish dance moves, and this impressive jump!

Puddle-wonderful! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/9/puddle-wonderful An unexpected torrential downpour began just as I arrived for Anna's session.

She loves to read so I had her get the current book she was reading for a few serious photos.

Then it was time to have fun in the rain and puddles!

Even some crazy make-your-own-slippy-slide fun!

Nicky is a real character!

Antonio was the serious older brother but I was able to coax some smiles from him.

The river proved to be a fun place to end their session, with a little wading. No one fell in, including the photographer! And here's a shot of all three adorable kiddos!

Adoption Day! {Red Thread Session} https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/6/adoption-day Friday May 28 was a very special day for Kayla--it was her adoption finalization!

This sweet girl has experienced many challenges and a rough road in her eleven years. But she now has her forever family!

And her special dog Vanilla!

Kayla's mom booked a Red Thread Session for Kayla a few weeks ago and we all had a great time running around Lancaster County Park. Kayla had never been there and loved exploring.

There's so much love between mother and daughter.

Through Red Thread Sessions, adoptive families receive a free session. I have two adopted girls of my own, and this is one of the ways I like to give back and pay it forward! If you are adopting, click here for the details and contact me today to book your session.

Oh Baby! Brayden's Newborn Session https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/5/oh-baby-braydens-newborn-session Last week, I met this sweet little peanut.

Brayden was born a few weeks early, and came for his newborn session at thirteen days old, and about five pounds.

I wasn't sure my hats would fit him, so I had a friend make me this little blue hat (and she did it overnight!)

Turned out my little sleepy owl hat fit him too!

Ready for some football? We've got a future Penn State football fan in the making!

Adorable don't you think?

Soccer Tournament! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/5/soccer-tournament This weekend I was a sports photographer! I got to shoot both the girls and boys 3v3 Super Soccer Shootout at Conestoga Valley High School. This was a huge event with hundreds of kids playing, parents tailgating, vendors, and all day fun.

Take a look at some scenes from the field:

The games included kids of all ages!

Confession: I haven't been to a soccer game in years! My oldest daughter played for one season when she was 8. She's 23 now so that was awhile ago! My next daughter tried it when she was 7 or 8. She discovered she really didn't like running and it wasn't her "thing." She was always at the back of the pack laughing, and rarely connected with the ball!

Brother & Sister https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/5/brother-sister

I met Harper and her brother Riley last weekend for a mini session in the park.    Harper was a bit of a challenge! She was what my mom used to call "a pistol Pete." I know her mom agreed! But that's OK--Harper is 3, and full of personality.  And I have two pistol Pete's of my own (one happens to be 23 and one is 6!) So I have some experience. And I love a good challenge! We got some great photos. I just had to discover what Harper wanted to do!

Harper liked driving the bus...

but wearing her birthday princess crown? Ahh,,,,,no! "Get this thing off me!"

Big Brother Riley was a dream..

{Sneak Peak} Mother's Day https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/4/-sneak-peak-mothers-day Once again, I was a participating photographer with Lancaster Newspapers Mother Day Tribute, to be published for the May 10th edition. The deadline is always quite early in March, which catches many of you by surprise! And, this year we had snow on the ground!

So this year, I had to get creative with some indoor locations...

Found some fantastic light at the Marriott in Lancaster! I also had a high school student shadow me for the afternoon sessions, and quite a good time teaching her about my job and giving her some photography pointers

The snow didn't melt in a week, in fact, we had another snowstorm, so for the next sessions we went to the Lancaster Train Station.

I love the oak benches. They have a beautiful color, and are fun for kids to climb on!

This is the third year I have photographed Isha and her children. So fun to see them grow up!

Finally, the weather got a bit warmer, although the snow hadn't completely melted

But had melted enough to get outside!

This is also the third year I have photographed Danielle and her seven kids. Two years ago, their photo was chosen

for the cover of the newspaper supplement

Look for these photos, and more on May 10th in the Lancaster Newspaper!

Dancers https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/2/dancers January is a slow time for photography…the holidays are over and it's cold! I spent some time on vacation with my family last month, and tried to catch up on some projects around the house. I've also been hanging out with Irish dancers!

My middle daughter, Olivia took up Irish step dancing two years ago, after we had to make a sudden change in sports after my oldest daughter's near-fatal horse accident (you can read about that back in blog posts from November, 2012). Having absolutely no connection with Ireland, I enrolled my Chinese daughter in Irish dance in January, 2013. She desperately missed ponies and riding but took to dance, something she had never done before, and discovered she had a talent. She applied herself and practiced. Two years later, she has advanced in literal leaps and bounds, is now dancing at the championship level, and we both have made wonderful friends at our dance school. My youngest daughter is also dancing, not with the same drive as her older sister of course (because that's Natalie!) but she is having a great time with it.

I recently shot some class action photos for our school, the Hooley School of Irish Dance and thought I would share some of these with you!

The advanced beginner class getting ready to dance--look at some of those tiny shoes!

Practice, practice, practice! And you can make your dreams come true!

My daughter, Olivia practices her bird jumps

Our dancers are busy getting ready for both competitions and our annual showcase, this year titled "The Road Home," and presented on March 28th, in Lititz, PA. I will be proving publicity photos for this event! This show is totally unique for Lancaster County! Get a little Riverdance right here in Lancaster--ticket information is available here

Mother and daughter https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2015/1/mother-and-daughter Here's a look at a mother/daughter session, shot in Lancaster County Park. Erika purchased the gift certificate I donated to the Mix at Arbor Place's annual fundraising banquet earlier this year.

We enjoyed a gorgeous fall day in the park, one of my favorite places for a session with the trees, leaves, stone walls and covered bridge

Olivia has stunning  blue eyes! Model material!

Here at Fly Away Home Photography, I like to give back to the community to causes I believe in, and donate gift certificates to several non profits throughout the year.

Check out the website of the Mix at Arbor Place to see the work they are doing with at-risk youth in the city of Lancaster.

Meet the Ruiz family! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/12/meet-the-ruiz-family

I had a fantastic time photographing this family two weeks before Christmas. It was a little colder outside than we wanted but we got some great family photos in the backyard.

There are some avid cyclists in the family--in fact, this couple is embarking on an eight month cycling tour through South America early in 2015!

We also did some indoor photos, with a Christmas theme by the tree...

Isn't he stinkin' adorable? And such a happy little guy through our entire session.

Amaris had her own mini modeling session

"No Dad, really, it's too small…..!"

And Grandma and Grandpa got in on some action with dragons and the kids.

the Sauder family https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/11/the-sauder-family I've been photographing Bennett and  Micah for several years now and it's been fun watching them grow up.

The boys and my girls have been friends since they all arrived home from China.

Micah is definitely a character. Big brother Ben is more serious
The setting was lovely, at the farmhouse where Sarah grew up. I always like to discover new locations that are meaningful to my families?

What are some locations special to you? Leave me a comment and suggestions below!

The P family in the park https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/11/the-p-family-in-the-park

At the end of October I met Amber and Justin, and their two girls, in one of my favorite places to shoot, Lancaster County Park. It was a beautiful Indian summer kind of day. We walked in the woods. tossed black walnuts around like baseballs, played with leaves and ran through the covered bridge.

Enjoy this sneak peak of their session!

Kids always like this little bridge over the creek.

Ready….set…..

GO!!!

Angelina & Justin's wedding! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/11/angelina-justins-wedding

Angelina and Justin were married in Angelina's grandmother's backyard on a Sunday in October. They braved the cold and wind on a day that was colder than any of us expected for October! It was a lovely ceremony, filled with family and friends and I was happy to be a part of it.

I love this "first look" photo! Such a special moment in their lives. Enjoy this sneak peak of their wedding day.

Not sure I have ever seen a bride photo bombed by a bear! The "getting ready" room was filled with trophies from a family member who is an avid hunter…in addition to the bear there were deer, a wolf, foxes, and a tiny mouse poking its head out of a knot hole. The girls weren't too sure about the bearthey weren't sure it was real..then…….

Sisters. This summer Angelina was maid of honor for her sister Crystal…now the roles are reversed!

Loved this idea for the table decorations…the gourds were cut out and a tea light placed in each one, along with fall leaves painted with a little glitter.

Sunflowers--perfect for a fall wedding!

Priscilla's senior session! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/11/priscillas-senior-session Priscilla is one of the sweetest young ladies I know…she's smart, talented and creative, and we incorporated her love of music and books in her senior session. She also makes the most amazing handmade Belgian filled chocolates and truffles…but we didn't bring any or I would have eaten them all!!

Favorite Jane Austen: Pride and Prejudice(favorite movie version--the six-hour adaptation starring Colin Firth of course!)

Isn't this an adorable quilt? Do you see the turtles?

Priscilla is looking at attending a Christian liberal arts college next year. We wish her the best as she decides on college and finishes her senior year!

Angelina: Looking back and looking ahead! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/10/angelina-looking-back-and-looking-ahead When Angelina retired from Irish Dance competition after the World Championships this spring, she wanted a photo session with her special trophies and awards. What a great idea to commemorate the years of training and competition!

We captured this session at Lititz Springs Park, a favorite location for the bright gazebo, creek, and stone walls.

Angelina isn't leaving Irish dance forever; she is an assistant teacher at the Hooley School of Irish Dance.

And she is getting married later this month!

And Fly Away Home Photography will be capturing the wedding!

Do you have special awards, hobbies, sports, achievements or mementos? Be sure to include them in photos!

The S family is growing! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/9/the-s-family-is-growing I met the S family on the family farm a few weeks ago--my clients have some perfectly amazing locations for our sessions!

Little Silas just celebrated his first birthday and he will be a big brother come November. He was simply and adorable happy little guy.

His favorite part of the session was "driving" the Gator.

He also enjoyed my vintage wagon and looking at the cows.

Gorgeous mom, expecting her second baby in November. I loved this gate, which opened onto steps leading down to a creek.

The farm also had this cute bridge, tire swing, a teepee and a zip line!

Tune in again, in a few months and maybe we will have a sneak peak of the new baby!

Sarah+Steven's Wedding! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/9/sarah-stevens-wedding JOYFUL was the word to describe Sarah and Steven's wedding on his family's farm in Chambersburg, PA

The decorations were gorgeous! Sarah and Steven planted most of the wildflowers and sunflowers themselves.

Of course, we had to do a take on American Gothic...

But Sarah had a hard time keeping a straight face!

Sarah and Steven greeted their guests before the ceremony, which was held in the barn. A wonderful thing about Mennonite church services and weddings is hearing the four-part harmonies when everyone sang hymns during the service

Aunts and Grandma made pie for the reception! It looked soooooo good!!! And tables decorated with wildflowers.

If you enjoyed this glimpse into Sarah and Steven's wedding, leave me a comment below and share this post!

Meet Alysha! a girl with a vision https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/8/meet-a-young-photographer Meet Alysha! A girl with a vision and a camera!

I recently met and had the opportunity to mentor this motivated young photographer. At just ten years old, Alysha had the initiative to contact galleries in Lancaster City (by handwritten letter!), and has had her work displayed in Annex 24. (She just had a birthday and is now 11). Her primary interest has been in flowers and architecture but wanted to learn more about photographing people, as well as lighting, composition and all that good stuff, so we got together a couple of weeks ago for a Downtown Photo Safari, with my girls as the models.

We all had a great time!

Alysha has a good eye and is eager to learn. It didn't take too long before she was directing the girls and getting some great shots.

Take a look at her Facebook page..I know she would appreciate a few more "likes."

Alysha has sold some of her work and is saving up for a new camera. I would love to see her get into a DSLR to take her photography to the next level and help her reach her dreams! If any of you are upgrading a camera, or can help us out with acquiring an inexpensive Canon Rebel or similar, I would love to chat!

~~Jen

UPDATE! Thanks to my sister-in-law, Alysha now has a Canon Rebel! Can't wait to see what she captures with it!

Jamaica Mon! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/8/jamaica-mon Earlier this summer, my husband and I attended a destination wedding in Jamaica at the incredible Rockhouse Hotel. The bride, Jill, is the sister of our son's wife..so that makes her…well, I'm not exactly what our family connection is technically but she is family! I was the "roving photographer" of the weekend, in particular, covering the rehearsal evening. Which was a fantastic gig as it left me free to totally enjoy the wedding day with no pressure of being the photographer!

Jill and Evan

Wedding rehearsal time!

The Rockhouse in Negril, Jamaica. The resort perched atop cliffs, with little thatched villas as the rooms. Ladders led down into the sea for swimming and snorkeling, and there were little grottos and small caves under the cliffs.

The spa…so peaceful!

After the rehearsal, it was time to party at the Pushcart restaurant! Toasts, dancing, conversation, and celebration!

The M family at Landis Woods https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/7/the-m-family-at-landis-woods I met the M family a few weeks ago and explored a new park I had never visited before

but has been on my list of locations to try out: Landis Woods Park.

We found a perfect little hide-out under a tree

The flowers--ok, they may have been weeds but I wasn't telling the girls!--proved to be a fun impromptu prop. What I love about on-location sessions is allowing the children to be themselves. Rather than staging a shot, I let the kids run the show, and follow them around going with what they want to do!

A-dor-able!! These two are buddies! And the mini is stinkin' cute to boot!

And here's  Erin..age 6! We got a bunch of cute photos while Mom was busy with her horse...

Oakley is the coolest dog! Smiled on cue and liked to wear sunglasses!

No, they aren't pets…they are all part of the Flynn Family!

Everybody say "Awwwwwww!"

Road Trip to Balmy Acres, in Massachusetts! part 1 https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/6/road-trip-to-balmy-acres-in-massachusetts It's been such fun meeting the gang at Balmy Acres! This was my fourth trip to the farm, and the fourth time taking photos of Karen and her family, including her very talented horse, Spyder, who has a repertoire of tricks and is currently learning to paint. No, I am not kidding! Karen hopes to perfect that skill by my next trip!

Karen's daughter, Grey, is growing up before my lens into a gorgeous young lady….

Next we have Katie..singing "Home, home on the range….."

Katie is a cancer survivor!! This shrine, on the property is special to her. She is now seizing life with both hands, living her dream, with her paint mare, Princess.

Can you feel the love??? This is Micaela and her horse, Cash

Stay tuned for more from this road trip in the next post!

A few weeks ago I shared Kelley's maternity photoswell, her baby is here!! And she is gorgeous!

Kelley came up with these wonderful vintage props for the session. I think the pull-toy cow may have even been her husbands!

I love taking photos of babies, but I really love capturing the love and the interaction of families...

such a precious face!
"Big brother Tucker" was very attentive, and of course we had to include him in the family photos

It is the season for family reunions and celebrating milestone anniversaries! The Babione family is the first of several I have scheduled this summer.

The children and grandchildren gathered to celebrate their parent's 50th anniversary

We definitely had some fun during this session!

Kelley's baby is due any day now!

I visited them on their farm a few weeks ago for maternity photos with her husband Curt and their dog, Tucker.

Tucker may have to adjust to not getting quite as much attention once their baby arrives!

Adoption Day! {Red Thread Session} https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/4/adoption-day-red-thread-session

This adoption story began over thirteen years ago when Theresa and her husband Ryan were dating. They had the desire to have children in the future but had the desire to create a family through adoption.

Their story: "We chose to become foster parents, knowing full well that our care and love for children who entered our home may only be temporary, but believing that at some point along the way there would be a child that would need a forever him. Just five months after we were approved as foster parents, we received a phone call on a typical day in October 2011 that changed our lives forever! There were twins…one month old…a boy and girl…ready to be discharged from the NICU at the hospital and they needed a home. We welcomed them into our lives and have loved them ever since. Two and a half years later, on April 10, 2014, their adoption was finalized! We are so blessed and grateful for that phone call two and a half years ago!"

    Grandmothers and grandchildren

I was honored to be chosen as Theresa and Ryan's Red Thread Session photographer to capture this anticipated day in their family, and be present at the courthouse for the adoption finalization as they were surrounded by family and friends. Afterwards, the busy twins enjoying running and jumping, (and kept me on my toes chasing them!) to capture a few more photos outdoors along the river.

Mother's Day! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/3/mothers-day Yes, I realize it isn't actually Mother's Day! But as a participating photographer for the Lancaster Newspaper's Mothers Day tribute, we have to have our Mother's Day sessions shot and submitted by mid-March. Which can be challenging when you prefer outdoor settings and we have been living in the frozen tundra! This year I did a few sessions at the Lancaster train station, which were great fun!

I had eight great families this year: here is a sneak peak!

Shardae wins for "Mom with the most children!" Count them--yes that is eight! Those big brothers were very helpful with their younger siblings--loved their matching polos! Maybe we will get the cover spot again this year for the most children? Check out the paper on May 11!

Danielle and her seven children were on the cover of the newspaper tribute last year, a session we did in my home studio. This year we headed to the train station. Loved their black and white themed tees and hats!

Kelsey and her neverland pirates came to my home studio, and we ended up with an impromptu Jake session with a pirate ship which was great fun.

Melissa, and her kids Emilee and Nicholas came to the train station as well, where we were able to shoot inside and outside. Mr Nick was promised a cookie when he was finished with his photo op!

Loved this fun close up of Jennifer and her daughter Alexis! They have been participating in the Mother's Day tribute every year!

For Kathy, and her daughters and grandkids, we shot at The Hollinger House barn…I have fond memories of Hollinger House back in the day when I was a scrapbooking consultant and had retreats at this B&B twice a year. Gina was the owner at the time and her food was a-maz-ing! She continues to share her gift through Food For Thought Catering right here in Lancaster.

Linda is now the new owner of The Hollinger House, and is giving it a complete makeover and renovation. It is going to be simply gorgeous when finished, hopefully later this summer. The entire house is being restored to its former beauty--you can follow along on its progress on their Facebook page until the new website is up and running. I hope for many photo sessions in this beautiful house later this fall. I am very excited to see what Linda and her team will create! In the meantime, Linda has graciously allowed me the the use of the renovated barn apartment for photos.

I worked with Isha and her adorable daughter two years ago…now Isha has a beautiful baby boy, Kobe!
We took advantage of the longed-for spring temps of 62 degrees and went to Rockford Plantation for their photo session.

Wow, another springlike day for Adrian and her sons' session earlier this month. These boys cracked me up! We enjoyed tromping around Long's Park.

Stay tuned and make sure to check out the Lancaster Newspaper's Mother's Day Tribute on May 11 to see these families and more!

Red Thread Sessions https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/3/red-thread-sessions As many of you know, my husband and I adopted two girls from China in 2006 and 2009--we also have two biological children, now grown. Here's a recent photo of the girls:

I am a huge supporter of adoption, and understand the great expense that families incur throughout the adoption process. I am pleased to announce that Fly Away Home Photography is now a participating volunteer photographer with Red Thread Sessions, offering a complimentary photography session for newly adoptive families. Red Thread Sessions celebrates adoption by bringing together adoptive families and professional photographers across the United States,  providing the gift of a professional photography session to families with newly adopted children. An ancient Chinese proverb says, "an invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place or circumstance. The thread may stretch, or tangle, but never break."

Please spread the word to adoptive families!

The Details

Your sitting fee is waived for your Red Thread Session.

Your session must be within three months of your child's adoption finalization. Adoptions can be domestic or international.

Sessions are one hour in length, to include immediate family of the adopted child. While I welcome families from throughout central Pennsylvania, sessions will be in the Lancaster County area.

Proofs will be posted in a password-protected gallery on my website within three weeks of your session. I offer a full range  of prints and digital images and packages for purchase.

Red Thread Sessions may be limited throughout the year. Please use the contact tab above to schedule and use "Red Thread Session" in your subject line.

Jessica's Baby shower https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/2/jessicas-b Jessica and her husband Nathan are expecting their first baby any day now. I captured their baby shower a few weeks ago.

The adorable cake matched the invitation perfectly

This was such a special moment to capture. Jessica's grandmother passed away ten years ago but left a hand-knitted baby set for her future great-grandchild. Jessica's mom kept this a secret tucked away in a closet for  years.  Opening this gift brought tears to many in the room.

Perhaps I will get to meet this little one soon!

winter https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/1/winter We have already had a surprising amount of snow this winter in central PA; the kids have three snow days to make up so far and it's only mid January. When the news calls for snow, everyone makes a mad dash for the grocery store to stock up on bread and milk! I'm still not sure why…we rarely get "snowed in" enough to actually run out of bread and milk.

Here are some peaks at a few of the "snow sessions"  that provided a few families some very seasonal Christmas cards this year.

With the Ishler family we tromped through the woods, did a little sledding and visited a neighbor's farmette with a lovely gray weathered barn and were photo bombed by some happy goats!

In the next snowstorm a pair of brothers came to my back yard for some fun-in-the-snow photos.

The pine trees held the snow beautifully.

Micah was able to catch quite a few snowflakes!

The  heavy snow was a bit of a challenge for me to balance a large umbrella tucked under my left arm while still having both hands free to use my camera while wearing some fingerless gloves. Someday I'll have to get a selfie of me in my snow-photography-attire!

So next time the weather guys are calling for snow, go out and buy your bread and milk, and think about scheduling a fun family portrait session!

feathered friends https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2014/1/feathered-friends We are in a deep freeze here in central PA. I know my mid-western friends are used to -1 but not here! Schools were cancelled for today because of the extreme cold. And we missed school Friday for snow…definitely still easing back into the post-holiday routine around here!

As it is much too cold to be outside, I've been watching and photographing the birdies out my back windows. Here's a collection of photos I've been taking this winter. (Many of my photos are also featured on the Perky Pet bird feeders website)

Mr Woodpecker wasn't around much this fall but he's back in the neighborhood

Currently we have three pairs of cardinals

When I took this photo of Mr. Sparrow, I knew I had to add this line from the hymn to the picture.

Definitely something I need to remember every day!

The birds are very happy for the heated bird bath!

Looks like temperatures should be back to normal around here in a few days--and then it will be time to start shooting the Mother's Day sessions!

And in this difficult economy, I am happy to announce that going into 2014 my rates are staying the same as 2013!

the Howard family--creatively crazy Christmas session https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/12/the-howard-family--creatively-crazy-christmas-session The Howard/Fritchman families went for broke in their crazy photo-booth themed Christmas session. I couldn't share these fun photos with you until after their cards were mailed.

I  photographed Cece and Jamie's wedding two and a half years ago and they are ever the cute lovebirds!

Their house was beautifully decorated and Lila owns the most adorable dog ever. I wanted to put Ruby in my pocket and take her home.

Family sessions at County Park https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/12/family-sessions-at-county-park Here's a look at two of the family sessions from this fall. I shot both in Lancaster County Park, definitely one of my favorite locations, and for the first time at Rockford Plantation.

Yes, it really was this fun working with the Oles family!

No one minded the somewhat brisk fall temperature too much, and the kids enjoyed climbing the tree and playing in the leaves.

The Blumenthal girls needed photos for their family Hanukah/New Year's cards. We had some fun with chalkboards.

Autumn Sessions https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/11/autumn-sessions We've been enjoying the fall foliage here in PA, and I've had sessions with children and families in the last few weeks. Here's a sneak peak of some of the little girls I have photographed this fall:

Adorable Laurel, who I have been photographing since before she was born, is now toddling around. She is just the cutest, and born to wear a tutu.

Kayla thoroughly enjoyed her session on the grounds of the Reading Public Museum. We were battling an invasion of gnats but they didn't phase her at all.

During a large family session, I captured these two cousins playing in the tall grass. Loved this totally candid moment of children playing!

Amy https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/10/amy

I have been recovering from a leg injury and surgery and have unfortunately been laid up for the last several weeks. My trip to Middleboro, MA had to be cancelled last weekend as I wasn't well enough to make the long drive, but I am working on possible weekends to reschedule either later this fall or in the spring. Stay tuned for the announcement! I am back at work now and scheduling sessions through the end of 2013. Dates are limited. Please book a session by December 1st to guarantee holiday delivery.

Here's a sneak peak of Amy:

A Little Princess https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/9/a-little-princess

This week I met Miss Ainslie again for the ultimate dress up session!

She got to wear Mommy's wedding dress, veil and tiara...and carry her mom's preserved bouquet!

I had to show Ainsley how beautiful she looked by showing her the photos in my camera.

After the "wedding" part of the session, we kicked back a bit...

This is always my favorite part of the session...following a child around the location and seeing her explore and capturing the real moments

as they happen of kids being kids! We had a ton of fun exploring the garden, climbing trees, "flying" like the fairies, and picking flowers.

I love my job!

Summer's End..and new beginnings! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/8/summers-end Well, I don't know about you but I wasn't ready for summer to end and school to start! Our family took a couple of very long back to back road trips, driving from PA to South Carolina, and then a week later driving to Mackinac, Michigan. I am not a morning person at all, but the beautiful light of sunrise drew me out of our cabin on the shores of Lake Huron to capture this photo below:

And in the last two weeks, we packed our oldest daughter's earthly belongings (and some of ours!) to her new apartment and the police academy, where she will be working very hard for the next seven months, and purchased a Barbie lunchbox for our youngest daughter to carry into kindergarten.

I will have more availability during the day for sessions which would be perfect for those of you with younger children. Contact me to schedule a session this fall! As always, weekends are still available but filling up for September and October--book soon for your fall session!

my son's wedding! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/7/my-sons-wedding My son got married a few weeks ago! And I was Mother of the Groom, not the official photographer of the event. My son in fact wanted me to promise not to carry a camera of any kind (including my phone!) so I would enjoy the day....well...I didn't promise! I just had to take a few to share the special day with my friends, family and fans.

We hosted the rehearsal dinner in our backyard, under twinkling white lights I hung in our trees. The highlight of the evening was setting off the sky lanterns.

 Getting ready!

We all had a ton of fun on this session with the D'Arco family! It was a blast to work with adults who enjoyed being a little silly!

Covered bridges are also becoming one of my favorite locations, and in Lancaster County we are blessed with lots of covered bridges.

Old Friends https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/6/old-friends Get ready....here are some photos of ME in front of the camera for a change!

Aside from having a blast photographing all the family and friends of Balmy Acres Stable in Middleboro, I also get to visit with a dear friend and BFF...I hesitate to use the word "old" friend, but, to be  honest, Susan and I met as freshman high school way back in 1976, so I do believe we qualify as "old friends!"

Susan's daughter, Luisa, an art student, helped me out with these photos of us.

We laughed a lot over the weekend!

On this trip I had time for a photo session of Susan and her twin daughters. Last fall when I was in Middleboro, I had to cut my trip short as Hurricane Sandy was bearing down and I needed to beat the weather home.

I am planning a return trip in September to the Middleboro area (and other parts of southeastern MA as well). Please email me for details!

Road trip to Middleboro, MA part 2 https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/6/road-trip-to-middleboro-ma-part-2 I had such a blast on my trip to Middleboro the first week of June and met a lot of fun people! And, a pet turkey and goose...yes, I did say a pet turkey. I think Cupcake the turkey is the official mascot of Balmy Acres Stable...he is in love with the goose Lucy. They are never more than a foot apart and have been known to photo bomb photos!

The London family had a lot of fun with our frame prop.....

I could feel the love between Sue and her 26 year old horse Cowboy...he is very much her baby...

and here is Sue's dad with Cowboy....

Last year, I photographed Alyson twice with her horse, Cameo..so this year we focused on her with her Jeep and her boyfriend....

Yippee! This group of ladies had a blast....moms, daughters, aunties, nieces....

Road trip to Middleboro, MA part 1 https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/6/road-trip-to-middleboro-ma-part-1 The first weekend in June I hit the road and headed to Middleboro, MA for a weekend of photo sessions. I met and captured families, children, horses, horses who do tricks, teenagers, old friends, spunky little girls, a Jeep, an adorable puppy, and a pet turkey!

Here are a few sneak peaks from the weekend:

Crazy in love! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/6/crazy-in-love I've know Crystal for years...ok maybe decades...she was my little sister's best friend in elementary, middle and high school (and I am a LOT older than them!)...so I guess I can say I've watched her grow up...with four kids now she and her husband are still crazy in love...we had such a good time during their family session in Lancaster County Park on Mother's Day.

One really cool thing about Crystal and Steve is that they went through the adoption process about the same time that my husband and I did...we adopted from China and they adopted a daughter from Guatemala.

The serious young lady....

The silly one!

OK--I just love her hair! Look at the curls! My daughter Olivia seriously covets this hair....

This one is also full of spunk...

The cool dude...yes, it is hard living with three sisters!

Graduation! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/5/graduation My daughter graduated from Messiah College this past weekend! I thought I would share a few photos:

And we were celebrating more than just her graduating college...and graduating from Messiah in three years...we were celebrating her being alive and graduating from college after her near-fatal horse accident last Thanksgiving. I know many of you followed her story on my Facebook page and prayed for her recovery.

The police academy is in her future, likely beginning in August. She is in the final stages of the hiring process for a police department in Maryland.

And here is some of our crazy family celebrating! (Note the Mickey Mouse bandaid on my youngests' chin...a close encounter with our coffeetable last week ended with a trip to the ER and 11 stitches!)

Roommates!

Laurel is One! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/5/laurel-is-one I've been photographing Laurel since before she was born!

She is now an adorable "chunky monkey!"

the K family--with twins! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/5/the-k-family--with-twins

Mom and Dad probably don't get a lot of time to dance these days, with two active little boys and twin five-month-old girls! But we were all able to have some fun at our recent session at Poole's Forge.

The babies were adorable-and I think this little twin loved the wind blowing back her hair...

"Sign, what sign?"

"Maybe it's better we play in the trees!"

So many to choose from but I think this one might be my favorite shot of the day.

Signs of Spring https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/5/signs-of-spring

These little guys, along with about twenty others and three mamas, live in a courtyard at our church, which is also my daughter's preschool.
During the last couple of weeks, the kids line up at the doors to watch all the cute baby ducklings running around. Soon, the staff will have a "duck walk" through the school, to lead them out of the courtyard and down to the pond. I ran a little contest on my Facebook page last week to caption this photo, and the winning caption was: "You must be this tall to ride this ride." The winner is receiving a free print of the duckies. Be sure to become a fan of my Facebook page for further promotions.

My daughter helped me plant flowers, filling in some annuals around the spring perennials. We will be hosting my son's wedding rehearsal dinner in our backyard in late June and there is much to be done to get the yard ready!

I have three of these fragrant viburnum bushes next to our patio--they are amazing!

You've Got a Friend in Me https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/4/youve-got-a-friend-in-me Don 't even think of separating these two at school! They have been in the same class for four years now...and they are only in second grade!

They are the kind of friends that know when the other is hurting or sad..they look out for each other..and help each other out at school.

Living in the same neighborhood is pretty sweet too.

Think maybe I will have a new assistant someday!

She enjoyed the beach last summer using my old Canon Rebel.

Don't forget to get in the shot with your kids! I think we mom's forget to do that as we take those day to day photos of our children. Give your kid a camera from time to time!

If you've never heard of these silly, plush, very huggable and albeit somewhat ugly in a very cute way, check out the Ugly Doll website (my daughter has about ten of them); they are also available  in local toy stores.

Bucket List! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/3/bucket-list What's on your bucket list? My twenty year old has one. She has good reason, as she almost died in an equestrian accident last fall.

She's doing well, and although we won't know the final condition of her liver injury until her CT scan in May, the doctors have pronounced her well enough to return to all normal activity (high impact stuff, such as riding horses, still not allowed.

On the bucket list: climbing a Mayan ruin and swimming with dolphins.

To celebrate not dying, she and I took a western Caribbean cruise last week, and were able to check those two items off the bucket list.

We had a wonderful week...soon she'll be graduating college in May and heading off to a new career and life on her own.

Art Auction raises $36,000! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/3/art-auction-raises-36-000 I was so pleased to once again support Harrisburg Habitat for Humanity by contributing a framed photograph to the annual juried art auction. Only about half the pieces submitted make it into the juried auction. Spring? https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/3/spring Spring is in two days and we had some snow yesterday! In fact, the weather has not been very conducive lately for outdoor photo sessions. I have my mini-studio set up but am hoping the weather starts to take a turn for the warmer real soon!

Here's a sneak peak at my Mother's Day sessions for the Lancaster Newspaper special tribute section. Dad's your turn is next! The deadline for the Father's Day tribute photos is April 15th. Spots are limited!

my daughter's birthday https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/3/my-daughters-birthday My daughter recently turned eight years old! As many of you know, we adopted our two youngest girls from China. Olivia was 14 months old on her "Gotcha Day." Here, we recreated one of the earliest photos we have of her, just a few days after her adoption in Nanchang, China.

In the photo she's holding, we were waiting at the airport in Nanchang to board a plane for Guangzhou and the final leg of our adoption journey and the city where we completed the US Immigration side of the paperwork.

She celebrated with a party at a local pottery studio with a few of her friends

Sisters https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/2/sisters When we planned our mini-session in the park for Saturday, we hadn't planned on the temp being a balmy 25 degrees...but Alexcis and Brittney were super about it...and styling their Uggs and newsies hats!

Nothing like a little jumping around on a cold day to get the blood moving!

BFFs! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/2/bffs

These two are BFF's for sure...born in towns over 250 miles apart in China..birthdays a few months apart...they were adopted by different families in Pennsylvania..one in Lancaster and one in Philadelphia...the family in Philadelphia moved to Lancaster and thought, there will never be any parents with children adopted from China here! We met at gymnastics one day several years ago and the rest, as they say, is history...

Two sillier girls I have never met...

They laugh the entire time they are together!

Both our families are so happy that there are many other adoptive families in our community with children from China. In fact, I help organize our local "Families with Children from China" chapter and we are gearing up for our Chinese New Year celebration next weekend as we usher in the "year of the Snake."

an update from my family https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/1/an-update-from-my-family We had good news in our family--at my daughter's last visit with the Hershey trauma team, the doctors told her she is recovering well and could return to college this week! Her college has a January mini-session of one class/day so it will be an easier transition back into the college routine; she still has to be careful and take it easy but at least she can now return to school and her friends. She is also now allowed to drive. Her injury was quite severe and she almost didn't make it. I know many of you followed her story on Facebook and my personal blog and I thank all of you for your prayers and support.

Here are a few photos of her I took in our recent little snowstorm:

Happy New Year! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2013/1/happy-new-year I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season! I am excited to start a new year here at Fly Away Home Photography with a brand new camera. I am also happy to announce that my rates for the new year remain virtually unchanged from 2012. In a time when the economy is terrible and we are on the edge of that fiscal cliff, I know you have a choice when it comes to which photographer captures your families memories. I am offering some new packages which will enable you to save money on prints and DVD's when purchasing as a package. My new 'Digital & Print' Collection is a fantastic option giving you a combination of prints of various sizes and a ten image disc for only $300.

Once again this spring I am participating in Lancaster Newspaper's Mothers Day Tribute section. The deadline is March 15 so book your session now. Dates will be limited for these sessions. The cost is $40 and includes your session and insertion into the paper. Mothers and children only! Dads, this year you get your turn too--the Father's Day Tribute photo deadline is April 19.

catching up https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2012/12/catching-up I have gotten behind on my "sneak peaks"...my oldest daughter was seriously injured in an accident right after Thanksgiving and was in the hospital for six days with internal injuries. It was pretty scary but thankfully she is now home and on the long road to recovery, which right now involves "house arrest" for at least a month with limited activity (read that--holding a TV remote and a phone) and not returning to college until February.

Here she is, hanging out with her buddy, Charlie at home

I met with two beautiful families since I last posted and before our daughter's accident.

The G family has three very handsome boys, and the youngest told me he already has a girlfriend...in his older brother's class!

I had a blast with this boys shooting around the Bent Creek Country Club in Lancaster.

My favorite shot of the day

The weather was absolutely stunning for the end of November too.

Cousins! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2012/11/cousins

Ok who is going to fly it?

This adorable bunch of kids are all cousins and the plane belongs to their great-grandfather. Can't get a better prop than a plane! LOL! Get it, prop?

(Yeah bad joke I know....)

silly boys! https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2012/11/silly-boys I have the pleasure of calling this family my good friends...we are neighbors, and we have shared the journey of adopting from China... twice! I've enjoyed seeing these boys grow over the last several years.

Can you tell which boy is the silliest one? Micah is a lot like my youngest...he has just a little streak of mischievousness in him. Sometimes those older siblings just kill all the fun you know?

Gorgeous Grey https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2012/11/gorgeous-grey Last spring I photographed Grey with her family and their horse, Spyder, at Balmy Acres Stable in Middleboro, MA. This session was all about Grey as she just celebrated her ninth birthday! Hard to believe this gorgeous girl is just nine--she was so comfortable and poised in front of the camera. Dad and Mom, are you ready for a teenager? The years fly by!

Danielle's Trash the Dress session https://flyawayhomephotography.com/blog/2012/11/danielles-trash-the-dress-session Danielle was a gorgeous summer bride but her horse Dandy missed out on the festivities...so I headed to Middleboro, MA for my second weekend session at Balmy Acres Stable to capture Danielle, her husband and Dandy. I had such a great time in the spring photographing riders and their horses on the beautiful farm, that I had to return for some New England fall foliage. I grew up in Massachusetts and do miss New England in the fall.
